The Future of Sustainable Coffee Farming

Coffee is one of the most climate-vulnerable crops on earth. Rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, and the spread of diseases like coffee leaf rust threaten the livelihoods of 125 million people who depend on coffee for their income.

At Freshly Beans, sustainability isn't a marketing buzzword — it's the only way to ensure we'll still have exceptional coffee in 20 years.

The Challenge

  • By 2050, climate change could reduce suitable coffee-growing land by up to 50%
  • Arabica coffee is particularly vulnerable, thriving only in a narrow temperature band of 18-22°C
  • Smallholder farmers, who produce 80% of the world's coffee, are the most at risk

What We're Doing

Direct Trade Relationships We work directly with farming cooperatives, paying premiums of 30-50% above market rates. This financial stability allows farmers to invest in sustainable practices rather than chasing short-term yields.

Shade-Grown Programmes We fund reforestation projects in our partner regions, promoting shade-grown coffee that protects biodiversity, sequesters carbon, and produces better-tasting beans.

Climate-Resistant Varieties We're investing in research into climate-resistant coffee varieties that maintain cup quality while tolerating higher temperatures and disease pressure.

Carbon-Neutral Shipping All our shipments are carbon-offset through verified reforestation and renewable energy projects.
